Darkness Ablaze is a set that will definitely make changes to the meta. Every card in this article will have it’s own uses or even decks, so here are the most competitively viable cards in order from the best to worst.
The first card in tier one is Crobat V. It’s ability allows you to draw cards until you have 6 in hand, but only once per turn. When combining this cards draw ability with Dedenne Gx’s, decks like PikaRom, Welder and Zacian will be able to get of turn one attacks consistently. Crobat will most likely find its way into decks that are already playing one or two Dedenne, since being able to dump your hand and draw 6 to then eventually drawing up to 6 more cards, with Crobat, seems way to powerful too skip out on.
The second card in tier one is Decidueye. It’s ability allows it to prevent all damage from V/Vmax and Gx pokemon. This ability completely counters top tier decks like PikaRom, Reshizard, Mew3, Dragapult and Zacian. The only bad thing about this card is that you loose to baby Blowns, and are a stage 2 deck. Although you can’t beat Blowns, you can easily get to your stage 2 Pokemon with cards like Rosa with Lillie’s poke doll. Overall this card will make these top meta decks play non Gx and V cards in order to have chance off beating decidueye.
The final card in tier one is Eternatus Vmax. It’s cheap attack cost, one dark and one colorless, makes it so it can hit big numbers quickly. It’s attack does 30 times the number of your dark types in your play. Now when you take into account his ability you can potentially do 270 damage. The only problem with this card is that your only going to be able to play Crobat V as your consistency pokemon, therefore Eternatus Vmax will probably be a high roll deck that when draws well will just Insta win games.
The only pokemon in tier two is Rhyperior V. This is mainly in here because of the expected popularity of Eternatus, whose weakness is fighting, and of the popularity of PikaRom(also weak to fighting). Rhyperior’s first attack discards an energy from the opponents active, while doing 80 damage. This makes your dragpult and adp matchup extremely favorable, since they won’t be able to get off their main attacks easily. Also with Diance prism and fighting dojo you can buff your first attack to 110 damage. Your second attack is also pretty solid, for the 1 fighting and 3 colorless you hit 210. You can add to this with Diance and fighting dojo making you number 240. With these two attacks you can two shot any Vmax pokemon while also disrupting their energy. The only issue with the card is the high attack cost, but with Coalossal you can get three energy down in one turn.
The next card in tier two is toughness cape. This tool gives your non-Gx basics 50 extra hp. This gives basic pokemon the ability to survive attacks from things like Zacian, zard, or even the new Eternatus. Overall I definitely think that more rogue decks will appear due to this card.
The next card is pier. He is a supporter that searches for any dark energy ( including the new special dark energy) and any dark pokemon. I can see this card being really good in Eternatus Vmax. With it you can search for your special energy and either your Crobat or Eternatus, making the Eternatus deck a lot more consistent. I can also see this card being played in obstagoon, since obstagoon needs only three cards in hand: rare candy, obstagoon, and energy. Piers searches two of these, making obstagoon more consistent.
Rose tower is the next card in tier two. When low on cards rose tower replenishes your hand to three. Being able to draw any number of cards is fantastic , for a stadium, but being able to potentially draw three is insanely good. I would defiantly see this card being played in Eternatus, as you probably will end up with a low hand size due to the amount of pokemon search. Overall this stadium can go into any deck that wants to be explosive.
Hide darkness energy is a special energy for dark pokemon. It’s just a little better for dark decks that aren’t tool box, since it gives you free retreat.
Powerful energy is probably the best card for colorless pokemon. It gives you 20 extra damage, if it’s attached to a colorless pokemon. The issue with this card is that there aren’t any good normal type attackers, so until we do we won’t be able to see this card’s true potential.
Centiskorch Vmax will be a very popular deck, when played with green’s and volcanion. This card will one shot any pokemon, but will need 3-4 turns to get to that points, this leaves it susceptible to cards like boss’s orders.
I will just go over the cards in this tier briefly as they are all tech/ rogue cards.
Greedant : for one twin has 100 damage with a hit and run ability. Play it with dolls and decidueye.
Hoopa: Dark type zapdos. Play it for the decidueye matchup in goons and Eternatus.
Salamence V/ Vmax: Play as a spread deck with shrines and welder.
Houndoom V: play as a one of in fire box for the dragapult matchup
Pokemon Breeder’s Nurturing: consider playing instead of Alolan Exeggutor in decidueye decks
Heat energy: consider playing in Reshizard, so you don’t get one shot by anything.
Scizor Vmax: this deck with frying pan and lucario&melmetal can be super consistent, but will lack damage.
Charizard Vmax: hitting for 300 damage sounds super cool, but the 5 energy cost is to much. This card will definitely be a collectors item though, so if you pull one i would keep it.
All the pokemon with the attack “mad party”: This is just another attempt by the pokemon company to bring a night march type deck into standard. Unfortunately I don’t think this deck has enough “mad party” attackers to do enough damage, but I will definitely test this deck out as it is “night march 3.0”.
